Rushabarara, a village surrounded by lush green hills, is one of several villages located in the northern part of the Bufumbira region adjacent to the borders of both Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Subsistence farming is the predominant livelihood and average household income is 10 cents/day. Malnutrition remains a major issue due to insufficient food production and crop diversity. There is no health facility in the village – the nearest one being 7 km away. This 4-6 hour hike over difficult terrain means that most villagers will not seek care until their condition has become extremely serious.
A primary school is located in the village. However the buildings and latrines are in disrepair there is a chronic shortage of furniture, supplies, text books and trained teachers. So, despite the proximity of the school, student attendance is poor and literacy rates remain low.
Raising The Village and Rushabara are looking forward to a collaboration which will secure a brighter future.
