BITONGO: BREAKING GROUND

I still have vivid memories of my first visit to Kisoro in 2008. Having lived in the central part of Uganda for most of my life, my first visit to Kisoro (which is in the south-western part of the country) was indeed memorable. The road was not paved and was in poor condition, and I had to hold tight onto my bus seat for the whole journey (about 360 Km) from Kampala. The terrain, the scenery, and the weather were all very different and new.

Many of the communities and people that we met were in desperate need of a helping hand. One of these communities was Bitongo village. Despite the fact that the villagers were hardworking and motivated, they had needs as a community that they could not afford. At the time, RTV had not yet done the right amount of assessment and preparations, and we did not have the funds that were needed. So, between then and now, RTV has done everything possible to see to it that this community is given the assistance that they need.

This week we finally started the ground breaking work for this project! The villagers were so excited, and kept saying “It’s finally happening!” It’s just the beginning but I’m certain that the future holds only great things for this community.

They say that a journey of 1000 miles starts with one step in the right direction, and I guess we’ve just made our first step in the direction of empowering the people of Bitongo. The ‘journey’ continues.

Enjoy your day,

Richard.
