Commercialisation of the festive season has meant that often, the true meaning of the season has become blurred. Gift giving has turned into a daunting task of finding the perfect gift and giving gifts that are unnecessary and frequently discarded. This season is about kindness, benevolence and generosity. Nothing is more rewarding than to give, as well as receive, a selfless gift. Did you ever think that a postcard can hold the most heart-warming gift of all? Did you ever consider gifting a goat? This is the year to think outside the box….
Raising The Village has set up a Goat Cooperative in Uganda which teaches participating families about financial literacy, provides knowledge capital about goats and builds leaderships skills. 17 female goats are given to the cooperative, where they are responsible for assigning a representative and leader, assigning funds and ensuring proper breeding. RTV covers the initial immunisation of the goats after which it becomes the cooperative’s responsibility. As offspring are produced, female goats are given to community members to care for while male goats are raised for 9 months and then sold, with a sum given to the family which bred and raised the male goat. The community must meet all targets for RTV to continue to support the cooperative for the next 24 months, giving them a greater incentive. The plan not only teaches and trains community members in becoming experts at proper goat care and breeding but it also teaches them basic financial literacy in terms of savings, loans and repayments, financial planning and budgeting. This allows them to work together as a community at becoming self-sufficient. ‘Gift Outside the Box’ allows you to contribute and reinstate the real meaning of giving. By selecting this gift, the recipient will receive a postcard notification that a donation in his/her name has been made to the Goat Cooperative. By choosing this exceptional gift you help a community become self-sufficient. By receiving this gift, you helped a village. This is the time to get back to the true essence of the holiday season.
